Councillor Mehboob Khan

Mehboob Khan is the Leader of Kirklees Council, West Yorkshire. Kirklees Council won the prestigious LGC Council of the Year award in 2008 and is the 7th largest council, serving 401,000 citizens with a gross annual budget in excess of £1 billion.

Elected in 1996, Mehboob has extensive experience in the public sector. He is currently Deputy Chair of the West Yorkshire Fire Authority, Chair of the Association of West Yorkshire Authorities and is a non-executive director of NHS Kirklees (PCT).

Mehboob has also held national and European roles representing local government, currently he is Chair of the Local Government Association (LGA) Safer Communities Board, member of the LGA Executive in addition to his role as a board member of the Standards for England. He is also a past Vice President of the Socialist Group on the Council of Europe.

An active member of the Labour Party for over 20 years, he is involved in Labour Party policy development at a national level, and is a member of the Labour Party NEC/Local Government Committee and National Policy Forum. Mehboob was the election agent in Huddersfield Constituency at the General Elections in 1997, 2001 and 2005.
