Standards for England ‘Much Improved’ councils… heads above the rest!
14 May 2010
Wendover Parish Council has been named ‘Much Improved Council of the Year’ at the National Association of Local Council’s (NALC) ‘Local Council Awards 2010’ in London on Thursday 13th May.
Sponsored by Standards for England, the award was presented to Wendover for the authority’s achievements in transforming themselves into a strong voice for their community over the last 12 months.
They narrowly beat runner-up, Hertford Town Council, with Winslow Parish Council scooping third place at the ceremony which took place at One George Street on Thursday, May 13.
Standards for England judge, Councillor Shirley Flint, said the judging panel were impressed by the high standard of all three nominations in the national awards.
“What impressed us most was the journey each of the three entrants had obviously been on over the course of the last year.
“All three had experienced challenges and obstacles but had tackled them with a clear determination and vision to make life better for their community.
“In the end, both Wendover and Hertford showed how they had recovered from a starting point where relationships were falling apart, but they had built themselves into strong advocates for their communities.”
The NALC ‘Local Council Awards’ were reinstated this year to recognise the work of local parish and town councils in delivering great services and a voice for their local communities on a daily basis.
Nominees for the Standards for England ‘Much Improved Council of the Year’ category were asked to provide evidence of their achievements in the following areas:
- Improvements in representing the local community
- Improvements in delivering services to the local community
- Improvements in working relationships with principal councils and other bodies
- Improvements in working relationships with private and voluntary sectors
- Commitment to training for staff and councillors
