West Sussex is a gold class ‘Local Democracy’ achiever

West Sussex County Council was named the ‘Local Democracy Award’ gold winner at last week’s 2010 LGcommunications Reputation Awards.
Sponsored by Standards for England for the second year running, the award aims to recognise those local authorities demonstrating good government, widened involvement and effective feedback to citizens on its performance.
West Sussex scooped this year’s top spot for its work publicising the council’s ‘Youth Cabinet Elections’ – a campaign designed to persuade young people to become more involved in the democratic process.
The authority joined silver ‘Local Democracy’ winners, Nottingham City Council, in accepting their award at the Reputation Awards ceremony in Leeds on May 27.
Standards for England Chief Executive, Glenys Stacey, said both authorities provided strong evidence of promoting effective democratic practice within the local community.
“West Sussex and Nottingham are prime examples of local democracy in action and have displayed considerable skill in managing good government by involving the community in its decision-making.
“They have also demonstrated their ability to enhance the overall reputation of their authorities with clear objectives, value for money, creative implementation and a well-considered strategy.
“In both cases this has resulted in residents having greater confidence in council and its ability to reflect the needs of local people.”
West Sussex will now be invited to present their work on the ‘Youth Cabinet Elections’ publicity campaign at the LGcommunications Reputation Seminar in September.
