Planning Ahead training session

Having a good understanding of the complete planning process will help standards committees to provide clear advice and champion good planning standards among councillors and officers.

The file below contains all the guidelines and materials you need to run a ‘Planning Ahead’ training session for your standards committee. Developed in partnership with the Planning Advisory Service, the session is based on a very popular workshop from the 2008 Annual Assembly of Standards Committees.

‘Planning Ahead’ is designed to be interactive and stimulate discussion. It includes a range of fictional planning scenarios and includes cards which committee members can play at the points where they think ethical risks might occur, and where different parts of the Code of Conduct are relevant.  It will help your standard committee to get to grips with the ethical challenges of the planning process and the types of complaints and cases they might expect to deal with.

This online kit is designed is designed to be printed off and used by monitoring officers or standards committee chairs to train groups of up to ten members. Larger group sessions are possible and both the Standards Board and the Planning Advisory Service may be able to assist you with running these. Full instructions, including the quantities of materials you’ll need to print, plus how to run each exercise in the game, are available in the guidelines and speakers notes.
